Mail-in repair policy
DormFix is a student-run repair service in Albany, NY. Mailing your device in works the same as a drop-off: you get a price before any work happens. Please read this before you ship anything.
1. Contact me first
Don't ship anything without talking to me. Text (786) 884-4281, email dormfixx@gmail.com, or fill out the form on the site and pick "Mail it in." Tell me the device, the model, and what's wrong. I'll give you an estimate and text you the shipping address.
What to send: the device only, plus a note with your name, phone number, and what's wrong (your ticket number too if you have one). Don't send cases, chargers, cables, memory cards, SIM cards, or game discs unless I ask for them. I can't promise extras will come back.
2. Packing and shipping it to me
- Pack it in a sturdy box with at least 2 inches of padding (bubble wrap or foam) on every side. It shouldn't move when you shake the box.
- Don't use an envelope or a padded mailer for consoles or laptops.
- You pay for shipping to me. Ship it insured, with tracking, and text me the tracking number.
- I'm not responsible for anything that's lost or damaged on its way to me, so insure it for what the device is worth.
3. Free diagnosis and a quote before any work
When your device arrives I check it and send you a quote by text or email with the repair, the part cost, the labor, and return shipping.
- Diagnosis is free. The one exception: if I have to open a console or laptop to find the problem and you decide not to fix it, it's $10 for my time. Phones are always free to check.
- If it can't be fixed, you don't pay for the repair. You only cover return shipping.
4. No work without your approval
I won't repair anything, order parts, or do anything that erases data until you say yes to the quote. If I find something else once I'm working on it, I stop and check with you before I go further. If your repair needs a part, you pay for the part before I order it.
5. Payment before return shipping
Mail-in repairs are paid in full before I ship the device back. I take Venmo, Cash App, or Zelle. Cash is accepted only if you pick up in person in Albany.
6. Return shipping
I ship your device back via USPS Ground Advantage, insured and with tracking. The return shipping cost is added to your quote, so you'll see it before you approve anything. I'll text you the tracking number once it's shipped.
7. Warranty
If my repair or a part I installed fails within 30 days of the device being delivered back to you, I fix it for free. On a mail-in warranty claim, you pay shipping both ways. The warranty doesn't cover new drops, cracks, or water damage.
8. Existing damage and your data
- I'm not responsible for damage that was already there when the device arrived, like cracks, dents, water damage, or problems from earlier repairs. I'll note anything I see when I unbox it.
- I'm not responsible for lost data. Back up your device before you ship it. Most repairs (screens, batteries, ports, cleanings) don't touch your data, but repairs can always go wrong, and some fixes (like a passcode reset or a software reset) erase everything. I'll always tell you before I do anything that wipes data.
- I use affordable aftermarket parts. On iPhones, a non-Apple screen or battery shows an "Unknown Part" notice in Settings, and True Tone may not work after a screen swap. If you want a higher-grade part, ask and I'll quote it.
- Opening a console can void the manufacturer's warranty. If yours is still covered, check that first.
9. Swollen or damaged batteries
Swollen battery? No problem. I replace those, but carriers don't allow shipping damaged batteries, so text me and we'll set up a local drop-off in Albany instead. If one arrives by mail anyway, I replace or remove the battery safely and contact you before doing anything else.
10. Locked and stolen devices
- Turn off Find My (iPhone, iPad, Mac), activation lock, and any Google account lock before you ship. If you can't, you'll need to prove the device is yours with a receipt or by signing in to your account.
- I only work on devices that belong to you. I won't take devices that are locked to someone else or that I believe are stolen. Locked or refused devices go back at your cost.
11. Unclaimed or unpaid devices
If a device isn't paid for or claimed within 60 days after I send you the final quote or tell you it's ready, and I've sent 3 text or email reminders with no reply, the device is recycled.
12. Unboxing and packing are filmed
To protect both of us, I film every package being opened and the device's condition when it comes out. I also film your device being packed before it ships back. If there's ever a question about damage or missing items, we both have a record.
